Studer - History

1912
Studer has been seriously influencing the history of grinding since 1912. From a small company at that time Studer has developed into an international enterprise which today employs 600+ people. Our position as industry leader is thanks to the know-how we have acquired through manufacturing more than 17,000 machines. The pioneering spirit of that era is also reflected in our product range today.
  1914
Founder Fritz Studer presenting the cylindrical grinding machine type OA at the Swiss National Exhibition in Berne.

1939
The range of totally mechanical machines available is expanded by the first universal cylindrical grinding machine RHU450 with hydraulic control.

1943
First Studer machine exported to the USA.

1961
The largest expansion to-date doubles the available capacity. Parallel to this, the production equipment and methods of manufacture are updated to meet the latest requirements.


1977
Studer launches the first CNC cylindrical grinding machine in the world Studer presents a world first: Machine beds cast from the mineral casting "Granitan".

  1990
Studer achieves the ISO 9001 Quality Assurance Certificate as one of the first machine tool manufacturers to do so.

1994
Integration of Studer AG into the Schleifring group, a member of the German Körber group.

1998
Studer launches a world innovation, the S21leanCNC, and with this machine lays the foundation for a fundamental concept for the future.

2000
With a restructured range of products and a healthy financial situation Studer is all set to meet the challenges of the next Millennium.


2002
Studer celebrates its 90 year anniversary.

2003
Studer begins the year with a new, fresh and modern identity, also applied on the design of the machines.

2004
Presentation of the new S12 high-precision cylindrical grinding machine complete with linear technology at the MAN Museum in Augsburg, Germany

2005
The Grinding Symposium held at Thun Expo Centre demonstrated many new models including the S12 which won the prestigious 'MM' award plus the heavy duty S36 and the all new S242 flexible machine for grinding and turning operations in a single machine and unveiled at the 'EMO' exhibition at Hanover, Germany in September 2005.

2006
During MACH 2006 in Birmingham, the renowned English trade magazine "Metal Working Production" awarded various innovation prizes. Fritz Studer AG emerged as winner in the category "Grinding/Abrasive Machine Tool" with its S242 combination machine tool for cylindrical grinding and hard turning

STUDER opens a new, fully air-conditioned "Customer Center"More than 300 grinding tests on customer workpieces, almost 1,000 participants in an extensive training program, a strongly increasing demand for machine demonstrations and consultation – this was how Studer's last annual statement on the subject of "In-situ customer service" looked.
